Weighted blankes have become increasingly popular over recent years, evolving from a specialist tool to bedroom staple.
Weighted blankets have gone from a specialist occupational therapy tool to a bedroom staple in the space of a few years. The idea is simple – firm, even pressure across the body, similar to a hug.
Why they’ve caught on
Deep pressure stimulation – the principle behind weighted blankets – has been used clinically since the 1970s, originally with autistic children and people with sensory processing needs.
A wave of direct-to-consumer brands repositioned it as a general sleep and stress product in the late 2010s, and it’s stayed popular since. Time magazine named it one of its top fifty inventions of 2018.
What the evidence actually shows
The research is modest but real. A widely cited University of Massachusetts study found around two-thirds of adults felt calmer after sleeping under a weighted blanket.
A 2024 review of several trials found a small, genuine reduction in anxiety symptoms – though no significant improvement for insomnia specifically, and the underlying studies were fairly small.
Worth knowing plainly: this isn’t a cure, and won’t touch a clinical anxiety disorder on its own. It’s a low-risk way to take the edge off at bedtime – closer to a good pillow than a treatment.
- The effect is real but modest. Expect “slightly calmer,” not “anxiety solved” – the research shows a small effect size, not a dramatic one.
- Sleep and anxiety aren’t equally supported. The calming effect has better evidence behind it than the insomnia claims specifically.
- Price doesn’t reliably track quality. A mid-range option with the right weight for your body will usually outperform an expensive one with the wrong weight.
- This sits alongside proper support, not instead of it. If anxiety is significantly affecting your day-to-day life, a blanket is a small addition, not a substitute.
