Popping bubble wrap: one of the internet’s most popular ASMR triggers.

Millions watch people whisper into microphones and tap on soap bars every day. The tingles are real for some of us – but does any of it actually calm the nervous system, or just feel like it should?

ASMR – autonomous sensory meridian response – is the tingling, pleasurable sensation some people get from specific sounds and sights: whispering, tapping, slow hand movements, someone folding towels with exaggerated care.

What started as a slightly odd corner of YouTube is now one of the platform’s biggest genres, and increasingly a genre of app and podcast in its own right.

The obvious question for a site like this one is whether it belongs alongside genuinely evidence-backed calming practices, or whether it’s simply pleasant background noise dressed up as wellbeing.

What the research actually shows

More than you might expect, though with real caveats attached.

A handful of small physiological studies have found measurable effects during ASMR viewing – reduced heart rate in some participants, along with brain imaging work suggesting increased activity in regions associated with relaxation and reduced activity in areas linked to anxious rumination.

One 2025 study using near-infrared brain imaging found ASMR videos appeared to help ease anxiety that had just been deliberately induced in participants. Another, comparing ASMR against recordings of nature sounds, found ASMR produced a comparable – in some measures stronger – drop in physiological arousal.

  1. Heart rate genuinely drops for some viewers. Several small studies report a measurable slowing during ASMR viewing, a marker of the parasympathetic “rest and digest” response switching on.
  2. Brain imaging tells a similar story. Scans have found reduced activity in regions tied to anxiety and rumination while people watch ASMR content they already enjoy.
  3. Not every signal points the same way. One well-known study found skin conductance actually increased alongside the drop in heart rate – a slightly contradictory result researchers still don’t fully agree on.
  4. The tingling itself isn’t universal. Depending on the study, somewhere between a fifth and a half of people report never experiencing it at all.

The catch

It only works if it works for you.

Nearly every study on ASMR draws its participants from self-identified “ASMR-sensitive” people – those who already know they get the tingles.

What that means practically is that the research mostly tells us ASMR is relaxing for people who already find it relaxing, which is a narrower and less useful finding than the headlines tend to suggest.

If you’ve tried it and felt nothing but mild irritation at the sound of someone tapping a hairbrush, that’s a normal response too, not a sign you’re doing it wrong.

Worth trying, worth dropping

Both are fine outcomes.

If ASMR does something for you, there’s genuine physiological backing for treating it as one more tool for winding down before sleep or easing a racing mind – not a cure for anything, but a legitimate calming input in the same category as calming music or a weighted blanket.

If it does nothing, or actively grates, that’s simply information about your own sensory preferences, and there’s no obligation to persist with something that isn’t working just because it’s popular.
